What aftercare you receive at Wayside
- A clear, written recovery plan
You leave with a step-by-step guide tailored to your surgery and a medication chart. - Same-day or next-day check-in call- depending on your appointment time.
A member of our implant nursing team calls you to answer questions, review pain control, and confirm you’re comfortable. - Laser-assisted healing support
We ALWAYS use soft-tissue laser therapy to reduce bacteria and swelling around the surgical area. This also speeds up the healing process at a cellular level. Photobiomodulation (PBM) supports quicker, more comfortable healing.
You will have seen the red-lightLED facemasks on TV and social media. We use similar wavelengths but with laser rather than LEDs, the laser is a lot more powerful and works on your cells at the mitochondrial level to speed your healing. - X-Guide Navigated implant placement = less trauma
Our computer-guided implant surgery does not even need a printed guide. We link an avatar of you made from the CBCT scan (3D Xray) and your photographic impressions (IOS) to the real you with a tracker arm clipped onto your teeth. Cameras over your head pick up the tracker arm and in real time we can guide your implant looking at a computer screen and not looking in your mouth.
This means we are guiding the tip of the drills and the implant to exactly the position we have already planned in your custom-made avatar in the software. Incredibly accurate, laser incisions-no bleeding, no swelling, shorter chair time, and typically less post-op discomfort. And more importantly your implants are in the best position possible so they will be able to support teeth that look as natural as possible in every case. Using this technology we mostly do not need to use bone grafts, as we can find and use bone that would be impossible freehand or even with a printed guide.
- Scheduled reviews (included)
Next day- call to check all is well- 2-3 weeks: suture removal (if we placed any which is rare with laser and X Guided surgery) and soft tissue check.
- 3–6 months: assessment for abutment/crown or final restoration (timeline can vary based on your case and bone quality).
- After fit: bite check and maintenance coaching. It is mandatory to see a Hygienist 3-6 monthly following implant placement.
- Direct line for urgent advice
We do our own on-call at Wayside and are available on our usual number if you need to call us. We would much rather you called or came in if something feels odd. We want to hear from you. - Hygiene and maintenance coaching
Our amazing hygienists show you exactly how to care for your implant using:- A soft manual or electric brush (implant-safe mode).
- Superfloss/interdental brushes sized for your specific spaces
- Optional water flosser technique.
- We’ll practise with you in-chair until you’re confident.
- Bite and lifestyle guidance
We assess your bite to protect the implant and advise on sport mouthguards, night-time grinding solutions, and sensible food choices during healing. - Long-term reviews
Implants can last decades with the right care. We build your implant checks into your routine hygiene visits to keep the tissues healthy and the bite balanced.

Your first week: day-by-day
Hours 0–24
- Ice packs – we give you one to start with to use as soon as you get home, then if you do get any discomfort, you can use another one later.
- Take prescribed pain relief and, if given, antibiotics exactly as directed.
- No rinsing for the first 24 hours. Then gentle warm salt-water rinses (or Ultradex) (cup of warm water + ½ tsp salt) 3–4× daily, starting the next day, but just held in place-no swishing for several days as the clot is delicate when first forming.
- Soft, cool foods: yoghurt, smoothies (no seeds), scrambled eggs, mashed potato, pasta. Avoid hot drinks for 24 hours.
Days 2–3
- Brush other teeth as normal; avoid the surgery site until we say it’s safe.
- Continue salt-water rinses after meals.
- Expect mild swelling/bruise discolouration-this is normal.
Days 4–7
- Introduce careful brushing around the area using a soft brush.
- Transition to warmer, soft foods; avoid hard, crusty, or chewy items on the implant side.
After 2-3 weeks
- Stitches removed (if you had any).
- Most people are back to normal daily routines — keep up meticulous cleaning.
Aftercare Advice
Eating, working, and exercise — realistic timelines
- Back to work: many patients return in 1–2 days (some even the next day with guided and laser techniques).
- Gym/running: light activity after 48–72 hours; avoid heavy lifting for 1 week.
- Crunchy/chewy foods: reintroduce gradually after review; keep hard foods away from the implant until we confirm stability.
- Alcohol: avoid for 24 hours, then only in moderation.
Keeping your implant healthy for life
- Brush twice daily: with a soft brush (manual or electric).
- Clean between teeth daily: (superfloss/interdental brushes).
- Hygiene visits: every 3–6 months as advised.
- Night guard: if you grind/clench.
- Quit smoking: we can help with practical support and signposting.
What to avoid (and why)
- Smoking & vaping: dramatically increases the risk of complications and slows healing.
- Strenuous exercise: for 48–72 hours: raises blood pressure and can cause bleeding.
- Alcohol for 48 hours: interferes with healing and some medications.
- Touching/poking the area: can disturb early blood clot and soft tissues.
- Very hot/spicy foods: for several days can irritate tissues.
- Flying for 10-14 days: if there was any sinus involvement or extensive grafting and stitches. The pressure in the cabin can make it very painful.
Red-flag checklist — contact us if you notice:
- Bleeding that doesn’t slow after 30 minutes of firm pressure on gauze.
- Increasing pain or swelling after day 3.
- Fever, unpleasant taste, or discharge.
- The temporary tooth/cover feels loose or high in your bite.
You have our number-please use it. We’d always rather check you early.

FAQS on dental implant aftercare
Most people feel comfortable in 2–3 days, with mild swelling/bruising for up to a week. Bone healing (osseointegration) takes 12-24 weeks on average, which is why we protect the implant during this period.
Start with soft, cool foods for 24–48 hours (yoghurt, smoothies without seeds, scrambled eggs, pasta). Progress to warm, soft foods after day 2. Avoid hard, crunchy, and chewy foods on the implant side until we give the green light.
Don’t rinse for 24 hours. From the next day, rinse very gently with warm salt water 3–4× daily. Brush the other teeth as normal; introduce gentle brushing near the site after day 3–4 with a soft brush. We’ll show you superfloss/interdental techniques at your follow-up.
Mild to moderate discomfort is common for 2–3 days and usually well managed with the pain relief we recommend. Take medication exactly as directed. Call us if pain increases after day three.
Many patients return to work within 1–2 days. Avoid strenuous exercise for 48–72 hours; resume gradually. Heavy lifting/contact sports should wait about a week unless we advise otherwise.
A little oozing is normal. Bite on gauze with firm pressure for 20–30 minutes if needed. Use ice packs intermittently on day one. If bleeding doesn’t slow or swelling worsens after day three, contact us.
Avoid alcohol for 24 hours. You can have coffee once the numbness has worn off, but very hot drinks in the first 24 hours may increase bleeding — keep them warm, not hot.
Stopping is the single best thing you can do for healing and long-term implant success. If you can, avoid entirely for at least two weeks; the longer the better. We can help with strategies and support.
Treat it gently. Don’t bite at all on the temporary and keep cleaning meticulous around it using the techniques we show you. We’ll adjust or replace it as needed during reviews.
With great home care and regular hygiene visits, implants can last decades. We’ll review your implant and gums at least once a year, often alongside your routine hygiene appointments.
Fees, guarantees & transparency
- You’ll receive a written treatment plan with fees before we begin.
- Components are sourced from reputable implant systems with proven long-term data (only Nobel Biocare).
- We stand by our work: if you keep up with the recommended maintenance schedule and home care, we’ll always be there to support, repair, and advise.
