What is composite bonding?

Composite bonding is the application of premium white filling material to alter the appearance of your teeth. This can be anything from the repair of a small chip to a complete remodelling of a tooth or several teeth. These filling materials when applied properly and polished adequately will look exactly like natural teeth. This requires a high degree of skill.

Why is it so popular?

Private dentists like us at Wayside have been using this using this technique for years to repair broken, worn or discoloured teeth. Social media has made this a high demand treatment as the results can be quick and much cheaper than porcelain veneers or crowns which are made in a laboratory. Also the natural tooth can mostly be retained underneath the composite, so it is less invasive treatment than veneers and crowns.

What is the procedure?

At your first visit, we will take photographs and discuss with you what you want to achieve. If what you require is more than a slight change to your teeth, we will take a digital scan so you can see your teeth and all of their contours in 3D on one of our screens. This will also show us your occlusion which is essential when changes are made to your teeth. It is also in full colour so you can see the exact shade of your teeth. The scan will be emailed to a dental laboratory together a photographs so that a ‘wax up’ can be made. This wax up will show you what your teeth will look like once you have had the treatment.

Once you are happy with the wax up, we can carry out the treatment. In more complex cases we use a stent (guide) for this which has been made from the wax up. Each tooth is done individually with the composite material being added in layers and then sculpted and contoured using special tools. Your teeth are then polished to resemble your natural teeth.
